Grammar and usage, explained
La carte or le menu?
In a French restaurant, la carte is the full list of dishes. Le menu is a set meal: two or three courses for one price. A meal goes entrée, plat, dessert.
On peut voir la carte, s'il vous plaît ?Can we see the menu, please?
Le menu est à dix-neuf euros. The set menu is nineteen euros.
An entrée is a starter
In French, l'entrée is the first course. In American English an « entree » is the main course, so be careful! The main course is le plat, or le plat principal.
En entrée, une salade de tomates. For a starter, a tomato salad.
Comme plat, je vais prendre le poisson. For the main course, I'll have the fish.
Ordering politely
To order, say je vais prendre… (I'll have…) or je voudrais… (I'd like…). Je veux sounds bossy to a waiter. Use en entrée, comme plat and en dessert to say which course.
Je vais prendre le plat du jour.I'll have the dish of the day.
Pour moi, la salade, s'il vous plaît.The salad for me, please.
En dessert, je voudrais une tarte aux pommes. For dessert, I'd like an apple tart.
Some: du, de la, de l', des
When you eat or drink part of something, French needs du (masculine), de la (feminine), de l' (before a vowel) or des (plural). English often says nothing at all.
Je mange du pain.I eat bread.
Tu bois de l'eau ?Are you drinking water?
Elle prend de la salade et des frites. She's having salad and chips.
After a negative: de
After ne… pas, du, de la, de l' and des all become de (d' before a vowel).
Je ne mange pas de viande.I don't eat meat.
Il n'y a pas d'eau.There's no water.
En: some of it
En replaces de + a food (du pain, de la soupe, des frites…). It goes just before the verb. With a number or a quantity, the number stays at the end.
Du fromage ? J'en prends un morceau.Cheese? I'll have a piece.
Des frites ? J'en mange beaucoup.Chips? I eat lots (of them).
Des croissants ? J'en veux deux.Croissants? I want two.
Special requests
Say what you can't eat before you order. Sans means without, with no article after it. After allergique à, remember à + le = au and à + les = aux.
Je suis végétarienne.I'm vegetarian.
Une pizza sans champignons, s'il vous plaît.A pizza without mushrooms, please.
Je suis allergique au lait.I'm allergic to milk.
Complaining politely
Start with excusez-moi, mais…, stay calm and say what's wrong. A little un peu softens it.
Excusez-moi, mais ma soupe est froide.Excuse me, but my soup is cold.
Le poulet est un peu trop salé.The chicken is a bit too salty.
