Grammar and usage, explained

Weather starts with il

French weather always starts with il, which here just means « it ». Three patterns: il fait + an adjective, il y a + du, de la or des, and a verb on its own.

  • Il fait beau à Dakar. The weather is nice in Dakar.
  • Il y a du vent à Montréal.It's windy in Montreal.
  • Il pleut à Lyon. It's raining in Lyon.

Il fait chaud or j'ai chaud?

Il fait chaud describes the weather. J'ai chaud says how you feel. Never say « je suis chaud »!

  • Il fait froid aujourd'hui. It's cold today.
  • J'ai froid, je prends mon manteau.I'm cold, I'm taking my coat.

Seasons: a quick reminder

You met the seasons in A1. They're all masculine: en été, en automne and en hiver, but au printemps. Months take en too: en juillet.

  • En hiver, il neige à Montréal.In winter, it snows in Montreal.
  • Au printemps, il fait doux à Lyon.In spring, it's mild in Lyon.

Temperatures

Use il fait + a number + degrés. Below zero, say moins. The francophone world uses Celsius.

  • Il fait trente-deux degrés à Dakar.It's thirty-two degrees in Dakar.
  • À Montréal, il fait moins quinze !In Montreal, it's minus fifteen!

Tomorrow's weather

For a forecast or a plan, use the futur proche: aller + an infinitive. Il pleut becomes il va pleuvoir, and il fait beau becomes il va faire beau.

  • Demain, il va pleuvoir.Tomorrow, it's going to rain.
  • Ce week-end, il va faire chaud. This weekend, it's going to be hot.

Booking a room

When you book, say what kind of room you want and for how many nights. Petit-déjeuner compris means breakfast is in the price.

  • Je voudrais réserver une chambre double pour trois nuits.I'd like to book a double room for three nights.
  • Le petit-déjeuner est compris ?Is breakfast included?

Holidays in the past

To talk about a past holiday, use the imparfait for the setting: the weather, the place, how it was. Use the passé composé for what you did.

  • Il faisait beau, alors nous sommes allés à la plage. The weather was nice, so we went to the beach.
  • C'était génial : nous avons visité le volcan. It was great: we visited the volcano.

Writing a postcard

A postcard is short and friendly: Cher… or Chère…, where you are, the weather, what you did, then a warm goodbye.

  • Chère Mamie, nous sommes à Montréal !Dear Grandma, we're in Montreal!
  • Il fait froid, mais c'est génial. It's cold, but it's great.
  • Grosses bises, ZoéLots of love, Zoé

Scene: a postcard from Martinique

Zoé, 7, and her little brother Léo are spending the summer at their grandmother's in Fort-de-France, Martinique. Papa had to stay in Lyon for work, so Zoé sends him a postcard. Read it and answer.
