Draft for review
This is a plain-English draft written to match how French Ultimate works today. It hasn't been reviewed by a lawyer yet, and the operator's legal name and address still need to be added. It may change before it's final.

This page explains what French Ultimate stores about you, where it's kept, why, and how to get it deleted. The short version: we keep what's needed to run your account and your progress, we don't show ads, and we don't sell or rent your data to anyone.
Who runs French Ultimate
French Ultimate is an independent online French course. For anything about your data, write to opeoluwagiwa@gmail.com.
What we store, and why
- Your account. Your email address, the name your Google account gives us if you sign in with Google, and how you sign in. Sign-in is handled by Google Firebase Authentication; if you use a password, we never see it.
- Your progress. Lessons and units completed, Bilan and exam scores, your review schedule, words you save, mistakes to revisit, game scores, streaks and achievements. This is saved in your browser's storage on your device. When you're signed in, it's also copied to your account in Google Firebase (Firestore) so it follows you between devices.
- Recordings you choose to save. In the pronunciation lab you can record yourself. Recordings stay on your device unless you save a take, in which case it's stored with your account in Google Firebase Storage (at most 5 takes per sentence, the oldest replaced first), so you can play it back later.
- Text you send to the writing coach. When you ask for a correction, your text and the writing task go from our server to Anthropic, whose Claude AI model writes the correction. We don't keep your text on our servers. Anthropic handles it under its own commercial terms and privacy policy. Please don't put personal details in texts you send for correction.
- A daily counter for the writing coach. To keep the coach available to everyone, each visitor gets a limited number of corrections a day. To count them we store a one-way hash of your IP address with the date, not the address itself.
- Server logs. Our hosting provider, Netlify, records basic request information such as IP address and browser type, to run and secure the site.
Speaking and listening
Speaking exercises use the speech recognition built into your browser. Depending on the browser, your voice may be processed by its maker (for example Google for Chrome, or Apple for Safari) under their privacy terms. We don't receive that audio. When a recording of a French phrase isn't available, your browser's own voice reads it.
What we don't do
- We don't show ads, and we don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
- We don't sell, rent or trade your personal data.
- We don't use analytics services that follow you across other sites.
Your browser stores a few things for the site to work: your progress, your settings, a note that you're signed in on this device, and the sign-in session that Firebase keeps. These aren't used for advertising.
Who processes your data for us
- Google Firebase: sign-in, saving your progress, and storing recordings you save.
- Anthropic: writing coach corrections.
- Netlify: hosting the site and the coach's daily counters.
These providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States.
How long we keep it
Your account data and progress are kept until you delete your account. Deleting it from your account page removes your account, the progress copied to it, and any recordings you saved. Progress saved in your browser stays on that device until you clear the site's data in your browser.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold about you, and you can delete your account yourself at any time. Write to opeoluwagiwa@gmail.com. If you live in the EU or the UK, you also have the right to object to some uses of your data and to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
French Ultimate is made for adults. Children shouldn't create an account without a parent or guardian's permission.
Changes
If we change how we handle your data, we'll update this page and its date. If a change matters, for example a new kind of data or a new provider, we'll point it out on the site before it applies.
