French in Nantes

French is the only official language in Nantes, as everywhere in France, and it is the language of school, work and local government. The city had about 328,000 residents in 2023 according to INSEE, up from roughly 309,000 in 2017, so many people you meet are newcomers themselves. Nantes was the main residence of the dukes of Brittany in the 15th century and still feels Breton in its culture, although it now sits in the Pays de la Loire region. Two regional languages are part of that history: the city has a Breton name, Naoned, and a Gallo one, Naunnt. Daily life, though, happens in standard French.

Why people in Nantes learn French

Most people learn French in Nantes because work and paperwork demand it. Airbus builds wing parts here and employs about 2,000 people in the city, and the wider metropolitan area has a large student population, so engineers, researchers and students all need French beyond the basics. Renting a flat means reading a French lease and talking to an agency. If you plan to stay long term, French nationality now requires at least B2 level, proven with a recognised diploma or a TCF or TEF result less than two years old. Nantes is also a good base for weekends on the Atlantic coast and in the Loire Valley, where English is far less common.

The French you'll hear

The French of Nantes is close to the standard accent you hear on national radio, which makes it a comfortable place for learners. A few western French words are worth knowing. In much of the west of France, a plastic or paper shopping bag is called a pochon rather than a sac. Wine lists feature muscadet, the dry white wine of the Pays nantais. Older place names and family names often come from Gallo or Breton, so do not be surprised by spellings that look neither French nor English.

French exams in Nantes

In Nantes, the Institut de Français Langue Étrangère (i-FLE) at Nantes Université is a test centre for the DELF and DALF, the official French diplomas recognised worldwide. It also runs the TCF, including the TCF version used for the DAP, the preliminary admission procedure for some foreign students applying to French universities. If you need a TCF or TEF result for a residence card or a nationality application, check that the session and version match the purpose before you register.

Check dates and fees with the exam centre directly; they change every session.

Questions about learning French in Nantes

Is French Ultimate a language school in Nantes?

No. French Ultimate is an online course with video lessons, speaking practice and graded stories, so there is no classroom in Nantes. Many people combine it with local life: you study at home at your own pace, then practise at the market, in shops or at work. If you want an in-person class too, Nantes Université's i-FLE runs semester and evening courses.

What level of French do I need to rent a flat in Nantes?

There is no official level, but in practice you will deal with a French lease, an agency and an inventory of the flat, usually without English. A solid A2 lets you handle viewings and simple questions, while B1 makes it much easier to understand the contract and your rights. French Ultimate's unit on rooms, furniture and renting a flat covers the vocabulary you will meet.

Can I take the DELF in Nantes?

Yes. The i-FLE at Nantes Université is a test centre for the DELF and DALF and also offers the TCF. Sessions are held a few times a year and places can fill up, so check its website well ahead. French Ultimate includes DELF and DALF mock exams, which helps you practise the format before you sit the real thing.
