Learn French in Mexico City
Mexico City has a French past you can still see in some of its best-known department stores, founded by emigrants from the Ubaye valley around Barcelonnette. Today French is studied by students, professionals and future emigrants to Canada.
French in Mexico City
Spanish is the main language of Mexico City, and French has no official role. Its influence comes from migration and education. From 1821 onward, families from the Ubaye valley around Barcelonnette in the French Alps settled in Mexico and founded businesses in the capital; El Palacio de Hierro and Liverpool, two department stores still operating, grew out of that community. The Liceo Franco Mexicano opened in 1937 for the French community and follows the French Ministry of Education's programmes, with campuses in Polanco and Coyoacán. The Alianza Francesa de Ciudad de México teaches French at centres in Del Valle, Polanco, San Ángel and Interlomas, as part of a national network of Alianzas across Mexico.
Why people in Mexico City learn French
In Mexico City, a growing reason to learn French is Canada. Montréal and the rest of Québec recruit workers and students, and French is central to many Québec immigration programmes, so the TEF is in demand. Students target universities in France and Québec. French and Mexican companies in cars, aerospace, retail and hotels work across both languages. Others are drawn by French culture through the Liceo, the Alianza's events and French cinema. Spanish speakers have an advantage: grammar and vocabulary are close enough that progress in the early levels can feel quick.
The French you'll hear
Mexico City has no local French, so the best foundation is the standard French of France, which the Alianza Francesa and the DELF use. If Québec is your goal, plan to add Québec French later: expressions like « une fin de semaine » for weekend and differences in accent are worth learning before you move. Spanish speakers already know many French words, but watch for false friends such as « embarrassé », which means embarrassed, not pregnant. French vowels, especially u, eu and the nasals, need careful listening.
- Je suis mexicaine, de Mexico.I am Mexican, from Mexico City.
- Je voudrais travailler à Montréal.I would like to work in Montréal.
- C'est presque pareil en espagnol. It's almost the same in Spanish.
- J'ai rendez-vous pour le TEF Canada.I have an appointment for the TEF Canada.
- Il y a beaucoup d'embouteillages ce matin. There is a lot of traffic this morning.

Questions about learning French in Mexico City
Is French useful for moving to Québec from Mexico?
Very. Québec's immigration programmes give strong weight to French, and day-to-day life in most of the province is in French. A TEF or TCF result is usually required as proof. French Ultimate can help you reach the level online, and its unit on French around the world introduces Québec French. It has no office or partners in Mexico.
I speak Spanish. Will French be quick to learn?
Reading and grammar often come faster than for English speakers, because the two languages share structure and vocabulary. Pronunciation is the bigger hurdle: French has more vowels and many silent letters. Plan regular listening practice from the start, and don't rely on Spanish spelling to guess how words sound.
Can I take the DELF in Mexico City?
Yes. The Alianza Francesa de Ciudad de México offers the DELF and DALF and publishes results online. French Ultimate does not organise exams. It provides DELF and DALF mock exams online so you can practise the timing and format first, then register with the Alianza for an official session.
