French in Geneva

French is the official language of the canton of Geneva, and it dominates daily life. In the Swiss Federal Statistical Office's structural survey for 2019 to 2021, about 79% of Geneva's residents named French as a main language, while about 10% named English, a high share by Swiss standards. That English presence comes largely from International Geneva: according to the cantonal statistics office, 38 international organisations were based in the canton in 2023, and the canton reports 176 states with a permanent mission. Yet the administration, schools, courts and local media work in French, and most of the canton's residents use it at work and at home.

Why people in Geneva learn French

Many international staff in Geneva can work in English, but French matters as soon as you step outside the office: renting a flat through a régie, dealing with the cantonal tax office, enrolling children in public school or seeing a doctor. French is also an official working language of the United Nations, so it helps for promotion and for meetings with partners from francophone Africa. If you plan to stay long term, Swiss naturalisation in Geneva requires French at B1 for speaking and A2 for writing. And living near France, with shops and homes in Annemasse or the Pays de Gex, makes French part of everyday life.

The French you'll hear

Genevans speak a Swiss French that is very easy for learners to follow, with a calm pace and clear vowels. The numbers septante (70) and nonante (90) are standard here, though 80 is usually quatre-vingts. A mobile phone is often un natel, and the meals keep the older names: déjeuner for breakfast, dîner for lunch and souper in the evening. Some words come from administration, such as la régie, the agency that manages your rented flat.

French exams in Geneva

In Geneva, the DELF and DALF are run by the Centre d'examens Lac Léman, based at ifage, an adult education foundation in the city centre. The same centre also organises sessions in Lausanne. For Swiss naturalisation, Geneva expects proof of French that meets the fide standards, such as a fide language passport or another certificate on the federal list, so check which document your file needs before you book an exam.

Check dates and fees with the exam centre directly; they change every session.

Questions about learning French in Geneva

Can I live in Geneva with only English?

In the international organisations you can, but most of the city runs in French: régies, schools, hospitals and cantonal offices. Many expats find that a B1 level changes their daily life completely. French Ultimate is an online course, so it fits around UN or office hours with short lessons you can do at lunch or on the tram.

What French level do I need for Swiss citizenship in Geneva?

For ordinary naturalisation, Geneva applies the federal minimum: B1 for spoken French and A2 for written French, proven with a certificate that meets the fide standards or with a fide language passport. Some people are exempt, for example native speakers. Check the cantonal naturalisation service for your situation.
